Blocks and Pellets
Hi everyone,I'm Venkat, and I want to share a framework I created to organize life. It's called Blocks and Pellets. It works by splitting life in to two main categories:long term areas of life, which are your "Blocks," and temporary overhead, which are your "Pellets."
Why I created this system
Before getting in to the framework I would like to share 2 reasons why i created this system,1. One, To make sure that i cover all aspects of life and
2. Two, To proactively design the way i lead my life
Here is a diagrammatic representation of blocks and pellets

Blocks are long-term domains of life
Now, Let's look at the Blocks first. These are the long-term domains of your life.
At the top is Block 0: Strategy. This is the big picture that gives everything else a unifying direction.Beneath that, there are 5 specific areas:
Block 1 is Personality - your external-facing self.
Block 2 is Finance - manages income and expenses and sets financial goals.
Block 3 is Family - covers all parts of family life.
Block 4 is Business - your creation and entrepreneurship.
And Block 5 is Identity - your inner narrative that others don't see.

Pellets are short-term, one-off tasks
Now, let's look at Pellets.
Unlike Blocks, Pellets are short-term, one-off tasks. They represent temporary overhead and don't actually add lasting value to your Blocks, but they still demand your time and energy.

Business Analysis
I offer end-to-end business analysis services that bridge the gap between business needs and effective software solutions. My approach is rooted in understanding your organization, clarifying the problem space, and translating business objectives into clear, testable requirements.I use the Cynefin framework as a practical sense-making tool. It helps us understand what kind of challenge we are dealing with before choosing the right analysis, delivery, and decision-making approach. Not every business problem should be treated the same way: some require best practice, some need expert diagnosis, some need experimentation, and some demand rapid action.

My Business Analysis Approach
| 1. Understand | 2. Sense-Make | 3. Define | 4. Validate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engage with the business, users, stakeholders, goals, pain points, and operating context. | Use the Cynefin framework to identify whether the problem is clear, complicated, complex, chaotic, or confused. | Translate business goals into functional requirements, non-functional requirements, workflows, decision rules, and acceptance criteria. | Create test cases and validation scenarios to ensure the final solution meets the original business need. |
The Cynefin Framework in Business Analysis
Cynefin helps me choose the right method for the situation. This prevents teams from over-engineering simple problems, oversimplifying complex ones, or rushing into solutions before the nature of the problem is understood.
| Cynefin Domain | Business Situation | BA Response |
|---|---|---|
| Clear | The problem is well understood, and there is an obvious best practice. | Document the process, confirm requirements, standardize the solution, and define clear acceptance criteria. |
| Complicated | The problem requires expert analysis, but a correct solution can be discovered. | Analyze options, compare trade-offs, consult subject-matter experts, and produce detailed specifications. |
| Complex | The relationship between cause and effect is uncertain. The right answer emerges through learning. | Run experiments, create prototypes, test assumptions, gather feedback, and evolve requirements iteratively. |
| Chaotic | The situation is urgent, unstable, or unclear, and immediate action is needed. | Stabilize the situation, identify immediate priorities, create short feedback loops, and move toward a more manageable state. |
| Confused / Disorder | The team does not yet agree on what kind of problem it is solving. | Facilitate conversations, separate issues, clarify assumptions, and classify the work before committing to a solution path. |
How I Work
Understanding the Business
I begin by engaging directly with your business to understand its goals, priorities, users, constraints, and challenges. This foundational step ensures every recommendation and requirement is aligned with what actually matters to your organization.Defining Business Goals
Together, we clarify the outcomes you want to achieve — whether that means improving efficiency, solving an operational pain point, reducing risk, supporting growth, or creating a better user experience. These goals shape the direction of the entire project.Applying Cynefin to the Problem Space
Before jumping into requirements, I help identify the nature of the problem. Is it clear and process-driven? Complicated and expert-led? Complex and uncertain? Chaotic and urgent? This step ensures we use the right method rather than forcing every problem into the same delivery model.Requirements Gathering
As the Business Analyst, I translate your business goals into clear, actionable requirements that development and technical teams can work from. This includes functional requirements, non-functional requirements, user journeys, process flows, acceptance criteria, and decision rules.Test Case Development
To ensure quality and alignment, I create detailed test cases based on the agreed requirements. This validates that whatever is built actually satisfies the original business goals before it goes live.
Business Analysis Flow
| Business Need | Sense-Making | Requirements | Solution Delivery | Validation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What problem are we solving? | What kind of problem is it? | What must the solution do? | How should the solution be built or improved? | How do we know it works? |
| Goals, pain points, stakeholders, constraints | Cynefin domain, assumptions, uncertainty, risks | User stories, workflows, rules, acceptance criteria | Design, development, iteration, implementation | Test cases, UAT, feedback, measurable outcomes |
Service Summary
| Stage | Focus | Output |
|---|---|---|
| Business Engagement | Understand goals, users, priorities, and constraints | Shared understanding of the business context |
| Cynefin Sense-Making | Identify the nature of the problem | Clear approach for clear, complicated, complex, chaotic, or confused work |
| Business Goals | Define what success looks like | Measurable outcomes and decision criteria |
| Requirements | Translate goals into actionable specifications | Functional and non-functional requirements |
| Test Cases | Validate solutions against requirements | Test scenarios, UAT support, and quality checks |
What We Can Do Together
If you are trying to improve a process, design a software solution, clarify requirements, or make sense of a complex business challenge, I can help you move from uncertainty to structured action.Together, we can:- Clarify the real business problem before committing to a solution
- Identify whether the work needs best practice, expert analysis, experimentation, or rapid stabilization
- Translate goals into clear requirements and delivery-ready documentation
- Create practical test cases that protect the original business intent
- Support collaboration between business stakeholders, technical teams, and end usersMy goal is simple: to help you make better decisions, build better solutions, and ensure that what gets delivered truly serves the business.
